The Step Into Next podcast + Buffalo Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen crossover
As a born-and-bred Buffalonian - and a loyal Buffalo Bills fan - I think about grit a lot. Maybe it’s something wired into us because of the lake-effect snow and the underdog energy of our hometown (and the team). But recently, I found myself comparing the journey of Bills quarterback Josh Allen to Helaine’s and mine in launching our Step Into Next podcast.
Bear with me - I promise I will land this plane!
Josh didn’t stroll into the NFL a ready-made superstar. He went to junior college, then he literally sent out 1,000 pitch letters begging for a chance to play somewhere, anywhere, for his final two college years. Only one school responded: the University of Wyoming. So he packed up, moved across the country, and worked, worked, and worked some more.
When he entered the NFL draft in 2018, he was considered polarizing. His completion percentage was low, his mechanics “inconsistent,” and of course, the critics were loud. But the Bills saw something else: heart, work ethic, leadership, and real possibility.
Josh showed up day after day, season after season (and if you’ve ever visited Buffalo in the winter, you know this is no small feat!). He worked his ass off, and didn’t wait to be perfect, looking over his shoulder in fear at every elite quarterback he was supposed to live up to.
He just kept throwing that ball. And last year, he became MVP of the league.
“When honesty feels empowering…and terrifying.”
One of our recent reels (check it out HERE - it’s super cute!) showcasing Step Into Next talks about the tensions we women feel all the time between the desire to be honest and the instinct to self-protect; or the need for our voices to be hear versus the fear of being misunderstood.
Choosing authenticity is fucking brave! Choosing authenticity publicly is exercising a different kind of muscle altogether.
Just like Josh Allen, with Step Into Next, we’re navigating ups and downs, some technical fumbles, messy do-overs, episodes where it sounds like audio gremlins were attacking us…not to mention moments where we question ourselves and what the hell we’re doing, but we keep showing up and working our asses off, like we have always done, individually and together.
Not because we’re perfect - not even close! - but because we believe in the impact of this work and in the women who need to hear these stories.
We’re here to normalize the “in-between,” in every single way it shows up, and we’re here to help women take the next step, even if it feels wobbly. Join us!
