You Can Always Change Your Mind
I made a decision, which is to stop overthinking and putting so much stock into what comes next and actually live in the moment.
Because with that decision came a realization:
I can always change my mind.
Nothing has to be permanent because nothing in life is“permanent.” Things are in a constant state of flux and flow - I mean, think about our physical bodies alone, where billions of cells die and regenerate each and every day. For some reason, this blows my mind.
Bottom line: life is going to change itself for you at some point or another (and most likely sooner than later), so you might as well be the first person to your own party!
If you’d asked me a few months ago what this summer would look like, I’d have had a VERY different answer than what is currently happening, which is that I am writing to you from a cafe in Paris on the Rue des Martyrs in the 9th arrondissement, where I live, speaking French (tres doucement, but still) and just…living.
I’m sitting here contentedly, not doing much other than watching the world go by, filled with the battalions of people marching or careening by me up this hill:
Little kids balanced on scooters or the backs of their mom’s bike (with a pile of groceries and probably a cat too)
Delivery people rolling crates of that day’s vin into the bistros
A frustrated old man dragging a cardboard box by its flap
Servers who love me because I tip like the Americaine I am!
If I peer out from my perch and crane my neck just the right way up the street, I can catch a glimpse of Sacre Coeur up in Montmartre.
Much more to come on what brought me here and everything I’ve been doing, but I can say I’m truly not sure I’ve ever felt this level of peace before.
Cheers to changing our minds.
As I write that, it occurs to me that Cheers in french is A votre sante or Sante - which means “To your health.” I’ll take that as a good sign!
